A pterygium is a wedge-shaped growth on the conjunctiva, the thin membrane that covers the white of the eye. As the point of the pterygium develops, it may extend toward the cornea, possibly obstructing vision or creating astigmatism by changing the shape of the cornea. It also may be the cause of persistent red eye or severe dry eye symptoms.
